General Manager (GM) with P&L (Profit and Loss) responsibility in a carton manufacturing company acts as the senior leader responsible for the entire business unit's financial performance, operational efficiency, and strategic growth. This role requires a strong techno-commercial profileblending technical knowledge of packaging manufacturing with commercial acumen.
Core Responsibilities
1. P&L and Financial Management
- Accountability: Own full P&L accountability, including revenue growth, EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization), cost control, and cash flow.
- Budgeting: Develop and execute annual business plans, operating budgets, and capital expenditure strategies.
- Reporting: Provide regular performance updates on financial KPIs to senior management or the board.
- Cost Management: Drive profitability through yield improvement, waste reduction, and material optimization.
2. Operational Leadership (Carton & Packaging Focus)
- Production & Efficiency: Oversee production, maintenance, and engineering to ensure the smooth operation of the paperboard/carton manufacturing process.
- Quality Control: Ensure high-quality processes, adhering to industry standards for packaging.
- Lean Manufacturing: Implement Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma techniques to improve productivity, reduce waste, and increase uptime.
- Supply Chain: Manage inventory levels, raw materials, and warehouse efficiency.
3. Commercial Growth and Strategy
- Sales Strategy: Drive sales growth by gaining a deep understanding of the packaging market.
- Customer Relationship: Oversee sales and customer service teams to ensure high levels of service and quality.
- Strategic Planning: Define commercial vision, including product mix, pricing discipline, and market expansion.
4. Leadership and People Management
- Safety & Compliance: Drive HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) compliance, maintaining high standards for the plant.
- Talent Management: Hire, train, and develop staff, building a high-performing team.
- Industrial Relations: Lead union negotiations or wage settlements to maintain a productive working environment.
Key Competencies
- Industry Experience: Proven experience in packaging (specifically corrugated, folding cartons, or paperboard).
- Techno-Commercial Acumen: Ability to understand technical manufacturing processes while managing sales and P&L.
- Leadership: Strong leadership in driving operational turnarounds and cultural change.
- Technology Savvy: Understanding of industry 4.0 techniques and modern packaging equipment.
Typical Background & Qualifications
- Experience: Must has previous experience as a General Manager in a manufacturing environment (Paper / Carton Industry)
- Education: Bachelor's in Engineering with MBA additional Degree or CPM (Certified professional Manager) Certificate.
- 12-15 years of experience With 5-7 years as General Manager.
