Job Purpose
The GCS Head of Foundation Stage leads the strategic development, delivery, and continuous improvement of Early Years provision (FS1 and FS2) within a British curriculum framework. The role ensures high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) and UAE regulatory expectations, fostering a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where all children thrive.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
- Lead and manage the Foundation Stage team, promoting a culture of high expectations, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Develop and implement the EYFS curriculum and strategic plan aligned with whole-school priorities.
- Line manage FS teachers and support staff, including performance management, coaching, and professional development.
- Contribute to whole-school leadership as a member of the GCS Primary Leadership Team.
- Ensure compliance with UAE regulatory requirements (SPEA/MOE) and safeguarding standards.
Teaching and Learning
- Ensure high-quality, play-based and inquiry-led teaching across FS1 and FS2 in line with EYFS principles.
- Monitor planning, teaching, and assessment to ensure consistency, progression, and challenge for all learners.
- Champion best practice in early years pedagogy, including continuous provision, child-initiated learning, and effective adult interactions.
- Support staff in meeting the needs of all learners, including EAL, G and T and students of determination.
Curriculum and Assessment
- Oversee the planning, implementation, and review of a broad, balanced, and engaging EYFS curriculum.
- Ensure robust baseline, formative, and summative assessment systems, including accurate tracking and moderation.
- Analyse data to inform teaching, intervention, and strategic planning.
- Ensure smooth transition processes into and out of the Foundation Stage.
Safeguarding and Wellbeing
- Promote and maintain the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection.
- Ensure a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment that supports children's wellbeing and development.
- Work closely with the GCS Designated Safeguarding Lead and inclusion team to support vulnerable students.
Parental Engagement
- Develop strong partnerships with GCS families, ensuring clear communication about children's progress and wellbeing.
- Lead parent workshops, meetings, and transition events.
- Address parental queries and concerns in a professional and timely manner.
Operational Management
- Oversee day-to-day organisation of the Foundation Stage, including timetabling, staffing, and resource allocation.
- Ensure learning environments (indoor and outdoor) are stimulating, well-resourced, and aligned with EYFS best practice.
- Manage budgets and resources effectively.
Person Specification
Qualifications And Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Education or related field; EYFS specialism preferred
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
- Minimum 5 years teaching experience, including Early Years
- Proven leadership experience within EYFS or Primary settings
- Experience in a British curriculum international school (desirable)
