ITS & AFC Systems Engineer / Supervisor

Reporting Line

Reports to: ITS & AFC Systems Manager

Job Purpose

The ITS & AFC Systems Engineer / Supervisor is responsible for the operational availability, performance, and integration of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Automated Fare Collection (AFC) platforms, and the supporting data center and digital ecosystem.

The role ensures high system uptime, seamless integration with mobile applications, ticketing systems, and payment gateways, and supports transportation planning through data analytics, reporting, and dashboards. The position combines hands-on technical supervision with operational coordination and stakeholder reporting.

Key Responsibilities

1. ITS, AFC & Data Center Operations

  • Supervise day-to-day operations of ITS and AFC systems, including backend servers, field devices, communications networks, and interfaces.
  • Ensure 24/7 uptime and SLA compliance for:
  • Data center infrastructure (servers, storage, network, power, cooling).
  • ITS subsystems (AVL, CCTV, ANPR, VMS, TMS, OCC/TMC systems).
  • AFC systems (validators, gates, ticketing machines, backend clearing systems).
  • Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance activities with internal teams and vendors.
  • Act as the first escalation point for critical system incidents.

2. Monitoring, Uptime & Incident Management

  • Implement and supervise real-time system monitoring for availability, performance, and security.
  • Track KPIs such as uptime, MTTR, MTBF, transaction success rate, and system latency.
  • Manage incidents using an ITSM / ticketing system, ensuring:
  • Proper logging, categorization, prioritization, and closure.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and corrective action tracking.
  • Coordinate planned maintenance windows and change activities to minimize service impact.

3. Systems Integration & Digital Platforms

  • Oversee integration of ITS and AFC systems with:
  • Central ticketing and back-office systems.
  • Mobile applications (journey planning, ticketing, payments, customer notifications).
  • Payment gateways (banks, wallets, QR, EMV, NFC).
  • Support API-based integrations and data exchange with third-party platforms.
  • Coordinate testing, UAT, and production rollout of new features or system upgrades.
  • Ensure data consistency across operational, financial, and customer-facing systems.

4. Transportation Planning & Data Analytics

  • Support transportation planning activities using data from ITS and AFC systems, including:
  • Ridership and demand analysis.
  • Route performance and service reliability.
  • Revenue, validation, and transaction analysis.
  • Prepare operational, technical, and management reports (daily, weekly, monthly).
  • Design and maintain automated dashboards for:
  • System health and uptime.
  • Operational KPIs.
  • Ridership, revenue, and service performance.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to management based on system data.

5. Reporting & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Prepare structured technical and operational reports for management and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with:
  • Operations teams.
  • IT / data center teams.
  • Vendors, system integrators, and payment providers.
  • Transport authority or client representatives.
  • Support audits, acceptance testing, and compliance reviews.

6. Supervision & Continuous Improvement

  • Supervise engineers, technicians, or operators assigned to ITS/AFC operations.
  • Define SOPs, workflows, and escalation procedures.
  • Identify system gaps, performance risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to reliability, automation, and user experience.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Engineering, IT, or related discipline.

Experience

  • 510 years of experience in one or more of the following:
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
  • Automated Fare Collection (AFC).
  • Transportation ICT / ELV systems.
  • Data center or mission-critical systems operations.
  • Experience in metro, BRT, bus, smart mobility, or large public infrastructure projects is highly preferred.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or lead engineer role is an advantage.

Technical Skills

  • ITS & AFC systems architecture and operations.
  • Data center fundamentals (servers, networking, storage, power, HVAC).
  • Monitoring and alerting platforms.
  • ITSM / ticketing systems (incident, problem, change management).
  • API integrations and system interfacing.
  • Mobile application and payment gateway integration concepts.
  • Databases, reporting tools, and dashboard platforms.
  • Understanding of SLAs, KPIs, and availability management.
