Job Description

Job Purpose:

The Lab Technician is responsible for providing essential support to the Lab Scientists in the execution of research and development initiatives within mineral processing, with a focus on both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical operations. This role involves meticulous sample preparation, precise execution of routine laboratory experiments, diligent data recording, and the maintenance of laboratory equipment and a safe working environment.

The incumbent will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the laboratory, directly contributing to the accuracy and reliability of experimental results that underpin process development and optimization efforts.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Prepare laboratory reagents, solutions, and equipment for experiments according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and maintain the cleanliness and organization of laboratory workstations, equipment, and storage areas.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, including tracking consumables, reagents, and supplies, and initiating reorder requests.
  • Perform precise mineral sample preparation tasks including crushing, grinding, pulverizing, splitting, and screening, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and handling of all samples and experimental products (solids, liquids).
  • Assist Lab Scientists in setting up and dismantling experimental apparatus for hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical tests (e.g., leaching reactors, filtration units, furnaces, kilns), and conduct routine laboratory experiments under guidance, accurately following established protocols.
  • Monitor experimental parameters (e.g., temperature, pH, flow rates) and make adjustments as instructed, and perform basic analytical tests such as pH measurements, density checks, and simple titrations.
  • Prepare samples for advanced analytical instruments (e.g., AAS, ICP-OES, XRF, XRD) as per instructions, and perform routine calibration, cleaning, and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment (e.g., balances, ovens, pH meters, filtration pumps), reporting any equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Strictly adhere to all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and waste disposal protocols.
  • Follow quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of prepared samples and basic test results.
  • Maintain clear and organized records of all work performed in laboratory notebooks and digital systems, and communicate effectively with Lab Scientists regarding experimental progress, challenges, and results.

Minimum Qualification:

Diploma or bachelor's degree in chemical, Metallurgy or Mineral Processing

Minimum Experience:

Minimum of 5-7 years of hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably in mineral processing, chemical, or metallurgical industries.

  • Proven experience in executing complex laboratory procedures and troubleshooting minor experimental issues independently
  • Familiarity with advanced laboratory safety practices and a wide range of common and specialized laboratory equipment.
