Job Description

Medical Underwriter - Health Insurance Pricing

The Medical Underwriter is responsible for evaluating medical risk, developing accurate pricing recommendations, and ensuring the sustainability and competitiveness of health insurance portfolios.

Key Responsibilities:

Underwriting & Risk Assessment:

  • Assess medical risk for both group and individual policies based on claims experience, demographics, and benefit design.
  • Review clinical information, claims trends, and high-cost claim drivers.
  • Translate underwriting assessments into clear, commercially focused recommendations.

Pricing & Financial Analysis:

  • Develop and validate pricing recommendations.
  • Conduct claims trend analysis, including frequency, severity, and large-loss volatility.
  • Build and refine pricing assumptions (e.g. inflation, credibility, pooling, and utilisation forecasts).
  • Model the impact of benefit changes and perform scenario analysis.

Data & Modelling:

  • Analyse detailed claims datasets to identify key cost drivers.
  • Support the development of internal pricing tools and forecasting models.
  • Review and challenge insurer pricing assumptions.

Market Engagement & Negotiation Support:

  • Collaborate with insurers to clarify underwriting decisions.
  • Support renewal negotiations through data-driven insights.

Reporting & Presentation:

  • Prepare underwriting summaries for tenders and renewals.
  • Present pricing outcomes and key risk insights to stakeholders.

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance or a related field.
  • Minimum 58 years of insurance experience as medical underwriting or health insurance pricing.
  • Experience with group medical schemes and market benchmarking.
  • Strong technical knowledge of medical underwriting and health insurance pricing.
  • Advanced analytical capability including actuarial/statistical modelling.
  • Ability to interpret complex claims data.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure during renewal cycles.
