About the Role
The Senior Backend Software Engineer will build and maintain scalable, secure backend systems for Axis fintech platform, focusing on microservices, APIs, and distributed architecture. The role requires 5+ years of backend development experience, strong programming skills, and expertise in designing high-performance, reliable systems.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable, highly available, and secure backend services for our fintech applications.
- Own the technical design and implementation of microservices, applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD) to establish clear bounded contexts, domain boundaries, and service responsibilities.
- Design and evolve event-driven architectures, including asynchronous communication, event processing, reliability, and failure-handling strategies.
- Design and implement reliable business workflows using Temporal or similar workflow orchestration technologies, including long-running processes, retries, compensation, and failure recovery.
- Make sound architectural and technical decisions across services, balancing scalability, reliability, performance, maintainability, and delivery requirements.
- Lead the investigation and resolution of complex issues across a distributed services ecosystem, including production incidents, performance bottlenecks, data consistency issues, and service failures.
- Design robust RESTful APIs and service-to-service communication patterns with appropriate versioning, security, error handling, and backward compatibility.
- Drive improvements in system performance, scalability, resilience, and reliability through profiling, benchmarking, architectural improvements, and optimization.
- Establish and improve observability across backend systems using logging, metrics, distributed tracing, monitoring, and alerting.
- Ensure engineering solutions follow high standards for security, code quality, testing, documentation, and maintainability.
- Conduct and contribute to architecture and code reviews, providing technical guidance and mentoring to other engineers.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, QA, DevOps, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Research, evaluate, and benchmark technologies and architectural approaches against industry best practices and best-in-class solutions.
- Identify technical risks and proactively drive improvements to architecture, engineering practices, and system reliability.
- Contribute to engineering standards, development practices, and long-term technical strategy.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience building backend and distributed systems.
- Strong proficiency in at least one of Go, Java, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Strong hands-on experience with backend frameworks such as Spring Boot, Node.js, Express.js, or NestJS.
- Strong understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.
- Practical experience applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD), including bounded contexts, aggregates, domain services, and service boundaries.
- Strong experience designing and implementing event-driven architectures and asynchronous processing systems.
- Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration, preferably Temporal or a comparable workflow engine.
- Strong experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases, including data modeling and performance considerations.
- Strong understanding of RESTful API design, API versioning, security, error handling, and backward compatibility.
- Hands-on experience with performance tuning, profiling, debugging, and troubleshooting distributed applications.
- Strong understanding of observability, including structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, monitoring, and alerting.
- Strong experience writing and maintaining unit, integration, and automated tests.
- Strong understanding of software architecture principles, design patterns, scalability, resilience, fault tolerance, and maintainability.
- Experience with distributed systems concepts such as idempotency, eventual consistency, retries, circuit breakers, distributed transactions, and failure recovery.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to investigate complex technical problems and identify systemic solutions.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions across teams.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in fintech, payments, banking, or other high-volume/high-availability environments.
- Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging and streaming platforms.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with CI/CD and modern software delivery practices.
- Experience designing systems for high throughput, low latency, and high availability.
- Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to technical direction across a team or organization.
- Experience working with both cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
