Job Summary

The Steel Detailing Manager oversees and manages the entire steel detailing process, including preparation, review, and approval of structural and miscellaneous steel shop drawings, 3D models, and fabrication details. This role ensures accuracy, quality, and compliance with project specifications, industry codes, and fabrication standards. The manager leads a team of detailers, coordinates with engineering, production, and site teams, and ensures timely delivery of all detailing deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

1. Management & Leadership

Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of steel detailers and checkers.

Assign workloads, set priorities, and monitor team performance.

Conduct internal training to enhance detailing quality and technical capability.

2. Detailing & Drafting Oversight

Review all structural steel shop drawings, connection details, erection drawings, and fabrication drawings before submission.

Oversee preparation of 3D BIM models using Tekla Structures, SDS/2, or Advance Steel.

Ensure drawings meet project specifications, AISC standards, and fabrication/erection requirements.

3. Coordination & Communication

Coordinate with structural engineers, project managers, production teams, and site teams to resolve design queries.

Lead communication with consultants to finalize connection designs and detailing clarifications.

Respond to RFIs and technical queries related to steel structures.

4. Quality Control & Compliance

Implement and maintain quality control procedures for all drawings and models.

Ensure compliance with international codes (AISC, AWS, BS, EN).

Perform final checks to ensure accuracy in dimensions, weld symbols, bolt schedules, and material specifications.

5. Project Planning & Delivery

Prepare detailing schedules, resource plans, and progress reports.

Follow up on deadlines to ensure timely submission of shop drawings and fabrication files (NC, DXF, IFC, BOM).

Coordinate with procurement for material lists, cutting lists, and BOQs.

6. Connection Design Coordination

Work closely with structural design engineers on connection design, loading data, and design modifications.

Ensure all connections are practical, economical, and suitable for fabrication.

7. Fabrication & Site Support

Provide technical support to fabrication shops regarding detailing issues.

Coordinate with erection teams to resolve site problems related to steel detailing.

Participate in site visits when needed to verify constructability and fit-up.

Skills & Competencies

Expert knowledge of steel detailing standards (AISC, AWS, BS, EN).

Strong experience with Tekla Structures (preferred), SDS/2, or Advance Steel.

Solid understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection processes.

Excellent leadership, communication, and coordination abilities.

High attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering (preferred).

10+ years of experience in steel detailing, with at least 35 years in a managerial or supervisory role.

Experience in industrial, commercial, or heavy steel structures is an advantage
