Teaching Assistant (TA) - Chemical Engineering Dept. - ADU

Job Summary

Reporting to the Chair of the department, the Teaching Assistant (TA) will support instructional, mentoring, and academic quality efforts in the Department of Chemical Engineering. This role involves assisting faculty in delivering course content, guiding students in labs and tutorials, supporting student participation in competitions, aiding academic advising, and contributing to accreditation and operational efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supports faculty members in managing the various aspects of their teaching activities at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Be responsible for the operation and maintenance of all ChE labs
  • Organizes, oversees and delivers laboratory sessions, as necessary, while ensuring full compliance with health and safety protocols.
  • Maintain a safe and clean lab environment and enforce safety protocols during all lab sessions.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of lab consumables, electronic components, and other materials.
  • Perform basic maintenance and operational checks on laboratory equipment.
  • Organizes joint tutorial sessions for students with faculty members.
  • Conducts independent tutorial sessions for students under the faculty supervision outside
  • regular classes.
  • Develop and share at least 15 solved tutorial problems per assigned course with students before the final week of the semester.
  • Offers tutorials based on the faculty recommendation to assist with solving any learning problems students may have.
  • Participates in class discussions and exercises (on line and face to face) in order to be
  • able to help the students outside the class as required.
  • Allocates weekly office hours for each course to assist students with their difficulties.
  • Assists with student events
  • Contribute to enabling top placements in such competitions by offering consistent mentorship and project support.
  • Provides limited coverage for the faculty when they are away attending research
  • conferences outside campus.
  • Helps with proctoring exams, grading assignments/quizzes/exams, and reporting grades.
  • Assists with compilation of accreditation documents and, if needed, with course files completion.
  • Assists faculty members with preparing course file/material/assignment, compiling course material, and uploading learning materials to learning management system for students ease of access.
  • Assist faculty and department advisors in contacting returning students regarding their required course registrations for the Fall semester.
  • Help resolve registration issues, aiming for a high percentage of returning student enrollments.
  • Support newly admitted students during their transition to registration, particularly for the Spring semester intake.
  • Contribute to re-accreditation efforts for undergraduate programs, including documentation, data collection, and evidence generation.
  • Assist in maintaining course portfolios and supporting continuous improvement documentation aligned with program learning outcomes.

Qualifications

  • To qualify you must have:A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from a reputable institution of higher education
  • A Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from a reputable institution of higher education
  • Laboratory experience and experience in operating ChME laboratory equipment.
  • Experience with HYSYS-ASPEN, Matlab, and all the Microsoft suite. Additional modern software in Chemical Engineering is a plus and a commitment to learn new relevant software is a must.
  • Relevant experience in preparing ChME projects and assignments.
  • Excellent command of the English language both in speaking and in writing is a must.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in use of Chemical Engineering Lab equipment
  • Proficiency in laboratory management and safety protocols.
  • Proficiency in experimental work
  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience is a plus.

Reporting To CHME Department Chair

Location

The incumbent will be staying in Abu Dhabi, and his/her duties will be as described above, while (s)he will have to go and work to our campus in Al Ain, as required. Transportation will be provided by the University, when the incumbent will have to go to the Al Ain campus.

Housing: No housing allowance.
