Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Dimensional Inspection: Conduct comprehensive measurements of the pipe using Pi-tapes, internal micrometres, and laser-based gauges to identify deviations in Outside Diameter (OD), Ovality (Out-of-Roundness), and Straightness.
  • Local Correction/Sizing: Operate local expanders, sizing presses, or end-rounders to correct localized flat spots or ovality, ensuring the pipe ends are perfectly circular for field fit-up.
  • Straightness Correction: Utilize vertical or horizontal straightening presses to bring pipes within the API 5L limit
  • Data Validation: Verify that dimensions comply with project-specific Inspection & Test Plans (ITP) and client standards.
  • Surface Integrity: Ensure that the sizing and correction process does not leave die marks, gouges, or mechanical indentations that exceed depth limits

Technical Skill Set

  • Measurement Mastery: Expert-level proficiency with Pi-tapes (standard and vernier), 3-point micrometers, calipers, and bridge-gauges for straightness.
  • Hydraulic Press Operation: Experience operating localized hydraulic sizing units
  • Mathematical Proficiency: Ability to calculate expansion percentage values
  • Reading Blueprints: Ability to interpret API 5L tolerance tables and client-specific Technical Data Sheets.

Key Qualifications

  • Education: ITI (Fitter/Mechanical) or a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: 3-8 years of experience in the Finishing Line of an LSAW, HSAW, or Seamless pipe mill.
  • Industry Background: Candidates from similar industries are highly preferred due to their experience with Critical Service pipes.
  • Physical Fitness: The role involves significant manual measurement and manoeuvring around heavy pipes in a high-activity industrial environment.

Preferred Attributes

  • A sharp eye for subtle dimensional flaws that automated sensors might miss.
  • Expert knowledge of safe distances and Crush Zone protocols when working with hydraulic presses and heavy pipe movement.
  • Traceability: Operators at are expected to log Before and After correction dimensions into the SAP or MES (Manufacturing Execution System) via tablets, Computer or HMI.

Employer-Specific Context

  • Maximum focus on End Squareness and Ovality to facilitate automated field welding.
  • Use of 3D Laser Scanning data to guide the manual correction process
  • High-throughput environment requiring rapid decision-making on pipe to maintain production flow.
